The Towers and Turrets are beginning to take shape. Or, at least a Tower has taken shape! This online class with Sharon Tomlinson and Deryn Mentock is a ton of fun, and I haven't had so much fun shopping for supplies in a long time! Check out my tools...
As well as all the pliers, cutters and stuff you see here, I am now the proud owner of a blow torch! Well, at least the little 'creme brulee' kind of torch.
The studio has seen much cutting, filing, hammering, drilling, soldering, riveting and the application of eyelets and tiny bolts and nuts to copper, brass and silver.
The first tower bezel is all ready and waiting for a piece of bright artwork to be slipped into the bottom and have resin poured into it. Exciting hey? Soldering that bezel was quite a task...made all the more interesting by the wrapt assistance of the men in my life. It's fascinating. They are surprisingly interested in this new direction, and I'm bemused by their excitement and interest in the fact that I've been shopping for tools that they can relate to. And are experts with. If you catch my drift... It would seem I didn't need to pay for a course - all I needed to do was ask them! But - don't tell them I said this - I've never seen anything as cute as this little darling come out of their workshop...
I think my favourite part is hammering the rivets out of a piece of wire - hand hammered rivets! Or, it might be wielding that cute little torch...or it could be drilling with the Dremmel tool...Oh hang on...my favourite part is when my wonderful men folk have left me with their sage and experienced advice and go back to their shed and leave me to play all by myself! (Love you to bits guys, but a girl needs to be in control of her own tools sometimes!)

Tracey--is this a completely new direction for you? It's lovely and I am eager to see how and what picture you fit into the frame--I think it will look exquisite. And how smart of you--happening upon something the menfolk just can't keep away from!
Hannah, I have dabbled with a little metal work over the years - very little really! And the resin is something that I've been keen to try for ages, yet haven't 'gotten around to' yet. I can see these little pieces incorporated into journal covers and as embellishments on handbags...maybe even belts? I'm enjoying the learning and discovery and looking forward to seeing where the new skill set will take my work.
I'm not sure I was smart finding something the boys find compelling really! But, I have to confess, they were able to help me iron out a few kinks in my technique!
Stay tuned for what goes in under the resin...I'm still 'auditioning' bits and pieces, but am very eager to get to that part of the playing!
