The Bear Grills of the Jack Russell World - A Story of Survival

See this cute, peaceful, quiet, little Jack Russell Puppy? He's a bit of a legend around here.

We've had so many litters of puppies here over the years, that I couldn't begin to guess at just how many babies we have raised. As they grow, we find them new homes with their forever humans, and much joy is spread in the world. In all the years, and through all those puppies, we've never had any 'go missing'. But, the last litter:

all cute little pumpkins, were another story. They took it in turns to disappear, and no amount of walking and calling, and looking in sheds, and under buildings and in holes in the paddock could uncover them. Ten thousand acres of backyard makes it kind of tricky to know where to look.

Each, in turn, went missing. Legend here, was the first. A full scale search found no trace. We suspected a wedge tail eagle might have swooped down and helped himself to a free meal (a thoroughly disturbing prospect). Two days and many fruitless hours of searching later, his sister disappeared. Back to full scale search mode. And guess what? I found him, hanging out beside a cattle grid, not far from the house. After two nights in the big bad world all on his own, he was very happy to see me, and very hungry. His sister remained elusive, making her reappearance the next morning, unscathed and keeping tight lipped about where she'd been. This just kept on happening! One would disappear, only to show up hours later; a day or two later another would do a vanishing act. We had no idea where they were sneaking off to, and began to suspect the existence of some puppy destination akin to Batman's  Bat Cave.

The time came to send two of them off to their new homes (which involved a 3 drive to catch a plane at 8 am - you can figure out what time we had to get out of bed for that!) All present and accounted for at 10am the day before departure. At 10.30am - two missing. 2pm a big thunder storm rolls through, dropping a good shower of rain. Full scale search launched. 4pm a second storm rolls in. Full scale search resumes. Then, it gets dark. No sign of missing two. Give up and go to bed, wondering how to tell a little family in Adelaide that they wont be getting a puppy tomorrow, because he's gone missing in action. 4am, Pa gets himself up for another search (he has a touch of tracker in him, but the lack of useful daylight, and our growing conviction that the Puppy Bat Cave was a real thing, was something of a barrier to any useful progress.) We left home, then turned around and raced back after a call to tell us one pup had appeared. Wrong pup. Took him anyway. Adelaide family happy to be getting a puppy, even if it's not the one they chose. Feeling broken hearted about the missing one - but he did survive 2 nights on his own a couple of weeks earlier....maybe he'll show up? As one day slid into another and then another, after 4 days there was a heavy storm, and we resigned ourselves to thinking he probably was no longer for this world, and gave up looking.

Then, 8 nights - yes, I said eight nights after he vanished, he reappeared! Trotting along beside his Mama like he'd never been away - except of course he was very skinny looking, and my word, he was famished!

We will never know where he was hanging out, how he survived (it was pretty hot) or how and why he made his way back. He has now gone to live with his new family - leaving us with lots of questions and not a single answer.

Bye Bye Babies...

It's time to say goodbye...Minnie's babies are all heading out into the world, to discover their new families and homes. This photo does me in...how cute are they? So soft and snuggly and small and delightful and bright and fun...

Awww...
"No, it wasn't us who chewed your favourite shoes and demolished your new plant; and we would never leave unmentionable deposits beside your back door"...

Trust me when I tell you that as cute as they are, as adorable and fluffy and sweet as they look - I'm not going to be heartbroken when the last one leaves on it's journey to a new home in a couple of days. Puppies can be a joy - but man, they can be a force of destruction unlike any other (except maybe three year old boys - but those days are in my past, and that's where I'm content to leave them!)

They are cute though, don't you reckon?

Puppies, Photos and Pretty things, or a not-so-typical day in the life of yours truly.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to join in a photography workshop right in my local town (no travelling for hours!) with a photographer by the name of Richard Posener. I urge you to check out his link - he takes fabulous portraits of people and their horses, among other things. He was an encyclopedia of photographic wisdom and we had a great day, and learned about apertures, shutters, ISOs and even a little photoshop. Lots of fun!

I thought I'd share with you a few of the images from the days exploring... first, a little shot of one of Minnie's babies - haven't they grown?! Now at the 'so cute it's going to be hard to part with them' stage, I know - from extensive experience - that they will quickly reach the 'cute, but if they destroy one more plant or chew through one more boot, I'm going to kill them' stage! I love this photo - even my firstborns chewed fingernails...I guess it's kind of tender, and the light is beautiful (at least to my eye, it is!)

Richard talked about depth of field, and the 'perfect circles' we could bring to our images...I really can't explain the science behind this - it is all to do with depth of field and focal length, but the circles are there! Very cool 'bokeh'!

When class was finished, we went to visit our local boutique, Rhubarb, which, I am tickled to tell you, has recently changed hands - having been purchased by one of the gorgeous young women who call my husband "Pa", and her partner (our middle prince!). How lucky is the little town of Theodore, to have an establishment of such charm, grace and good taste? Not to mention, wonderful photo opportunities! If only I had a raspberry pink wall to hang that clock on.....

Babies!!

It's been a busy time around here just lately, with more babies popping up than we quite know what to do with!

First the foals started coming...this little darling was among the first to join us - three were born that day! There have been more since, and yesterday was delivered a very special princess, who would in fact wear a tiara and have jewels were she a human - she is bred, as they say, "in the purple". There is a very real worry that I may have to sleep outside so she can have my bed!...No, just kidding - but she's that special! (Where I have written special - please read: expensive, costly, and nerve wracking that some grim fate may beset her!) when she has settled in a little, I'll post a photo so you can see for yourself that she actually looks like any other foal and wonder what all the fuss is about!

And puppies! Tina, our Mama Kelpie delivered 7 robust little fluff balls a few weeks ago - these are but 3 of her brood; whom I'm threatening with all manner of evil if they don't stop, cease and desist leaving little messes at my back door, and getting tangled up in my feet when I walk outside. These are destined for a life chasing cows or sheep and working hard - which is what they are bred for and what they thrive on...Kelpies go stark raving mad (and send their owners that way quickly too!) if left with nothing to do and nothing to herd.

Then, there came Darla Daisy...she's technically my grand-baby-puppy - Her daddy is my middle son, and she visits me at "Nanny Day Care" while her mummy goes to work...It's all completely hilarious, but she is ever so cute!

And then, most importantly of all...We became a great Aunt and Uncle again yesterday - the newest member of the Hewitt clan weighed it at 11lb 2oz (I think the baby was heavier than the foal!) Lachlan Roger is in line to receive the BEST children's book I have ever seen; which is what I really started writing this post about in the first pace! It's called "On The Night You Were Born", by Nancy Tillman. I got this copy from The Nile online bookstore, and it is the most delightful, precious book...The inside slip cover reads:
On the night you were born, the moon smiled with such wonder that the stars peeked in to see you and the night wind whispered, "Life will never be the same".
Nancy Tillman...created On The Night You Were Born to convey to children, at an early and impressionable age, that "you are the one and only ever you". She observes, "By using common events such as geese flying, ladybugs landing, and the moon up at morning to celebrate the birth of a child, it's my hope that even as children grow into adults, whenever they see these events they will be reminded of how valuable they are".
Not only is this a treasure of words, the illustrations are awesomely beautiful too!

So, if you are in the market for a gift for a new bub...do have a look at this book - This will be the third one I have sent to a fresh baby...and I think I'll keep a stash of them for every new little one who comes along (I now just have to find another wonderful title to give to second children in their families! Any suggestions?)
